As knitters and crocheters we’ve all had that compliment on a sweater right? Now multiply it by 10, and that’s what getting that compliment is like on a dress. You BLOW their mind.

Beginner Sweaters: Knitting a Top Down Raglan

KnittingChantal Miyagishima8 Comments

Top down? Nope. No thanks. This is what I thought when I was just dipping my toes into making a sweater. As a knitter it took me forever to get to knitting a top down sweater and I think it’s because I didn’t understand it. So I’m here to break it down for you so it’s not as stressful, and you can have an idea of how a raglan is worked!

TRAVELING AFGHAN SQUARE #6

Back in 2019 I was reached out to by Alexi of Two of Wands, wondering if I may want to take part in the Lion Brand Traveling Afghan project. I of course said yes, and now today I am bringing you my square (#6) in the blanket!

HOW I USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO INFLUENCE MY DESIGNS

KnittingChantal MiyagishimaComment

I can’t be the only person who hoards yarn for a long time right? Not because I don’t want to use it… but because no design will ever be good enough for it. That my friends was my six balls of Alpaca Pure that I picked up from Purl Soho during the Lion Brand Blogger Bash in March 2019. So after it collecting dust for almost a year, and my eyes lusting after it every time I passed, I finally said fuck it and just decided to use it without much thought other than: “Top down raglan, wider collar”.

9 TIPS TO START DESIGNING PATTERNS

Knitting TipsChantal Miyagishima2 Comments

So you want to design patterns?

I’ve been designing for over 3 years now, and as I’ve grown and experimented, I’ve learnt a lot. A lot about myself, a lot about fashion and style, and a lot about KNITWEAR DESIGN. I’ve been lucky enough to have multiple people come forward and ask if I can give them advice on how to start writing patterns, so here goes - all my tips, in on location. I hope they help!

HOW TO MODIFY PATTERNS: PART 3 - 5 TECHNIQUES FOR THE PERFECT PATTERN FIT

KnittingChantal MiyagishimaComment

Chances are as a knitter, you may not know all of the tips and tricks out there that you can use to make a pattern fit better on your body. That’s why I’m here to help. Though I don’t know everything, these are a few things I’ve learnt along the way. Since this topic of inclusivity has been mainly based around designing for plus size bodies - I figured I would add more tips there, even though these tricks are universal.

In this blog post we are going to go over: Short rows, bust darts, adjusting for length, shaping and shoulder shaping.

HOW TO MODIFY PATTERNS: PART 2 - WHERE AND HOW TO MANIPULATE A PATTERN

Patterns work in numbers of stitches. I like to imagine these along the lines of sewing; If you add more stitches, you add more fabric. If you take out stitches, you have less fabric. When a designer is grading a pattern (writing for multiple sizes), they are essentially adding and subtracting the amount of “fabric” that needs to fit over each sizes measurements.

THE TUNNEL VISION SWEATER

Ever have that one stitch hat you just hate doing? That… is the purl for me. If I see a pattern started with a purl, I can already feel the “Ugh” coming on. Fun Fact: I started selling scarves and created Knitatude without knowing how to purl. #IFYOUDREAMITYOUCANDOIT

HOW TO MODIFY KNIT PATTERNS: PART 1 - FINDING YOUR BODY SHAPE

Knitting, Knitting TipsChantal Miyagishima8 Comments

With the conversation popping up more and more about size inclusivity in patterns, I wanted to create a 3 part series of blog posts on different ways how you can alter a pattern to fit better to your body shape.

The best part about knitting and crocheting is the simple fact that you can take out or add anything from a pattern to tailor it to your body. All of our bodies are shaped differently, which means that what may work for the designer, may not work for you. I like to think of patterns as blue prints that I can edit and make changes too - and you should too!

Knitatude: A Year in review 2019

KnittingChantal MiyagishimaComment

Holy. How did another year go by?

As that clock strides towards midnight tonight, I can’t help but sit and contemplate how far Knitatude has come. My baby girl is now 5 years old. What started as a circle scarf that I didn’t get for Christmas has now become a full fledged business. I’ve gone from selling scarves when I didn’t know how to purl, to diving into designing and now leaving the world of markets in a 5 year span.

Happy Holidays! I hope you are snuggled up by the couch and getting your knit on after all the festivities yesterday.

Even though we have only 5 days left of 2019, I wanted to squeak in one more pattern for you: The Duality Scarf! My last pattern of the year, and this one is near and dear to me because: It’s designed after my mom.

I wanted to put together what I have on my wish list this year, as well as showcase 8 things that I think would be perfect for the knitter in your life. These all range in price and are things I am currently dreaming of, or already have and think would be a perfect fit to your home! So here we go:

SNOWBELL HOLIDAY TREE SKIRT - FREE PATTERN

Why buy a tree skirt, when you could make one? My mom has kept the same tree skirt in our family for all 30 years of my life, so I wanted to create something that my own would be able to use for decades to come. With knits making their way into every inch of my life, I knew I wanted to bring them into the holiday too.

Is the Namaste Jimmy Beans Wool Backpack Worth It?

KnittingChantal Miyagishima4 Comments

Back in January I had my first siting of the Namaste Jimmy Beans Wool backpack. I was perusing my IG stories, and this stunner of a bag popped up in a story from Knit Brooks. Immediately I swiped up and saw the $150 price tag and faltered. I’m not a big backpack type gal, but the blush was just so damn pretty that I got ready to take out my credit card to purchase. That’s when I started chatting with Lauras (the owner) team and they so lovingly sent me out one to see what I thought instead, and to share my thoughts on my Instagram feed.
