3 TIPS TO KNIT A DIAMOND BLANKET: THE GIRLS BEST FRIEND BLANKET

diamond blanket pin 2.png

Are you a serial blanket knitter or crocheter? I’ve made a few in my life, including 3 queen sized cable blankets from Lion Brand and I totally think that you either get hooked, or you move one. Turns out, I’m a bit of both.

Being a garment designer for the most part, I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and make a blanket for Todd. One that wouldn’t leave him sweltering hot. (Anyone else have a furnace for a partner?).

My eyes caught on the new Lion Brand Cobblestone, and I figured I would give it a try. Cobblestone is a 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn, that’s got a good bounce to it. I upped the needle size on this one to an 8mm to get a more sproigy type vibe and the result is amazing. Drape-y, not too hot, and still cozy. Since Todd is my best friend and to put an ode to the diamond Stitch, this blanket is called the Girls Best Friend Blanket, and you’ll be able to find it as a kit from Lion Brand on June 4th. (Coincidentally, the same day I’ll be doing a live on their Instagram.)

Ok, to the meat and potatoes: 3 tips when knitting or crocheting a blanket

1). Get ready for a commitment

For some reason I forgot how large blankets are! This blanket was definitely fun, but it is a project that needs many hours. Though, I think there are many people who love this fact! I would say in total it took me 60 hours? I would knit it at work (when it was small enough to bring in my backpack), at home, in the mornings and while netflixing it up at night. In the end, it’s totally worth it though. The payoff it huge!

2). Work on it in chunks

Since this does take a while to knit, enjoy it! I worked on the Girls Best Friend Blanket while working on another design because it was easy to come back to. Do a few rows and then leave it for a bit, and then come back to it.

3). Memorize that pattern

Blankets usually have a repeating pattern, so the faster you can memorize it, the faster it will whip up. The Girls Best Friend Blanket is an 8 row repeat. After the first couple repeats, it becomes easier to remember, and I found my hands just knowing what to do.

There you have it. 3 tips for knitting or crocheting a blanket. What tips do you have!?
