HOW I USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO INFLUENCE MY DESIGNS

HOW SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCES MY KNITWEAR DESIGNS

I swear March is when my brain gets hit by a wave of great ideas, and one of them… was the #SyngoniumSweater.

I can’t be the only person who hoards yarn for a long time right? Not because I don’t want to use it… but because no design will ever be good enough for it. That my friends was my six balls of Alpaca Pure that I picked up from Purl Soho (sadly this yarn has been discontinued, but I have sub suggestions later on in this post) during the Lion Brand Blogger Bash in March 2019. So after it collecting dust for almost a year, and my eyes lusting after it every time I passed, I finally said fuck it and just decided to use it without much thought other than: “Top down raglan, wider collar”.

THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN

If you don’t know, I am the gal behind Knitatude on instagram (come follow along if you don’t already) and I always gauge my designs by checking to see the interest first on social media. Usually I can tell if it will be a hit after a few Instagram stories… or a flop. So I showed the yoke off in a few quick stories… nothing. I knit all the yoke, separated the sleeves and showed it on my body in stories… crickets. Goody - one more design to crash and burn Chantal, AND it was your most coveted yarn too. #Guh.

It’s then when I got the idea of adding some lace into the mix, even when I know my audience (you!) aren’t the biggest fans... I know I know, my designs are definitely more basic, and that’s really because I just like - the basics. I like good, chill knits where you don’t need to think and can stop down mid row. But hey, why not try something out? Let’s learn together! So I scoured my stitch dictionaries (my favourite one is this one!) and I found this beautiful lace pattern that may work with the right amount of stitches I had. Problem? All stitch dictionaries are written with the pattern knit flat, so I had some work cut out for me. Turns out, first lace pattern I picked? Uuuuugly. Second… is the one you see now and it’s *muah*. I threw up a sneak peek of the lacy sleeve in my stories and my DMs BLEW. UP. We have a winner friends!

So without further adieu - The Syngonium Sweater (SIN-GO-KNEE-UM) - named after the Syngonium plant.

DESCRIPTION

A little bit of lace, a little bit of love. The Syngonium (SIN-GO-KNEE-UM) Sweater is a fun top down sweater that incorporates the cutest lace details on the bottom of the bodice and sleeves, much like the leaves on the syngonium plant. Slightly over sized, this sweater has 2-5" of positive ease. Scared of lace? Don’t be. This is a very beginner lace pattern that’s an 8 row repeat, but you only need to focus for three of them!

Knit top down, in the round and seamless, this pattern is written in 9 sizes – XS (S, M, L, XL) (2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL). It is suggested that you highlight your size, so you know which stitch count to follow. Model pictured is wearing the size M and is 5’7”, 145 pounds and has a bust of 36.5” in circumference, for reference.

How to choose your size: Find your bust measurements below. Positive ease is built into the pattern, meaning final measurements are 2-5” on top of that number.

S – 32-34” bust
