READY FOR THE PERFECT FALL HOODIE?

OK, it may still be August, but I have the perfect pattern for ya. One that you can throw on for a beach bonfire or when the fall chill starts to come in on those morning dog walks. And I’m not gonna lie, it’s pretty cute. It’s the perfect cabled hoodie that is slightly cropped, batwinged, and has a hood that you are going to fall head over heels for!

THE BACKSTORY

I have been wanting to make a hoodie for a while now, and have never had the courage to take the plunge. This go-round I decided to master my own fear and just do it! I’ve been all about batwings (check out my Summer Slip Tee if you haven’t yet!) as I love how oddly slouchy they are, while still tapering in at the waist and giving an hourglass look. When coming up with this design I really liked the idea of a bonfire hoodie that you would throw on after sitting at the beach all day. Making it perfect to with Birkenstocks and some high-waisted cut-offs. It’s got such a laidback, chill and slouchy vibe to it and I knew it would be a great summer to fall transition piece.

THE YARN

Lion Brand Woolease. This yarn is a WORKHORSE! It’s got such versatility to it, and it’s good for so many projects. Made with 80% acrylic, and 20% wool means that you *can* throw it in the washing machine - though I always like to lay mine flat to dry and handwash.

It’s got the perfect amount of wool to keep stability, while still giving a great drape and feel when worn. Fun Fact: I actually had never used this yarn until last year! It’s been available in the States in Michaels/Joann’s etc forever, but we’ve only JUST recently (and I mean in the last year) had it pop up in big box stores in Canada and I am SO happy it did.

DESIGN DETAILS

The Shape:

I mentioned above that I have been in love with the batwing look, and I really wanted to recreate it in this pattern. Plus I love the look of a crop, so I made sure it hit right at your natural waist, to accentuate that hourglass figure. I know some people HATE crops, but PLEASE give them a chance. They look so good on all body sizes, ESPECIALLY plus sizes. Throw it over a shift dress, or an empire-style waist and it’ looks SO GOOD. I also love that the width goes straight out to the arms, and then the arms still have that sleek look of the ribbing that doesn’t drown you in fabric.

The Hood:

Oh lord, the HOOD on this is probably my favorite part. I took a LONG time to figure it out, and special thanks to ChiWei from 1 Dog Woof and Megan from Knittle And Pearl for talking to me and helping me figure it out one night on Zoom. I REALLY dislike a pointed hood, so for this one, you will find that it’s rounded at the top so you don’t get a weird elf-ish type vibe. It’s definitely a bigger hood, and I love the slouch and the double brim on it. Perfect to cinch up when those winds come in.

PICKING YOUR SIZE

This pattern has roughly 10-27” of positive ease, depending on the size that you’re making. The smaller sizes are on the larger scale here, and the larger sizes have less ease. This is all to ensure that your pattern when knit (it looks like a funnel when lying flat) lands from elbow to elbow at the widest part.

How to choose your size: Find your bust measurements below and work the size according to it. These sizes are based off of womens bust measurements according to the Craft Yarn Council standards, but it is unisex. I would suggest finding your biggest circumference and choosing that size.

Knit in the round, bottom-up, seamless.

DESCRIPTION

Need a hoodie to cozy up in during a beach bonfire? Already prepping for cooler temps for fall? The Cable Crush Hoodie is the perfect fit. Cropped, with a batwing-esque design, this pattern is a bottom-up sweater that has plenty of ease to cuddle up in. Tighter at the bottom, it gradually increases through the torso with roughly 10-27" of positive ease at the widest part (different sizes have different amounts of ease due to them all landing at an elbow-to-elbow wingspan), giving a super roomy and boxy like shape. But the real stunners of this piece are the cables that adorn both the front and back, and the oversized hoodie that’s matched perfectly with a rounded top and an icord drawstring.

Pattern details: Knit bottom up, this piece starts at your waist and gradually increases all while being worked in the round.
